OCIM

The main mission of Ocim, a general service of the Université Bourgogne Europe, is to support and partner public policies initiated and carried out by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR), particularly in the context of dialogue between science and society.

Who is Ocim for and why?

As a resource center, Ocim has been exploring contemporary issues for the past 40 years through the prism of museums and heritage institutions. Ocim is active in a wide range of fields, and is a veritable crossroads of ideas and resources for organizations and professionals, at the crossroads of science, heritage and society, both in France and internationally, mainly in the French-speaking world.

Ocim’s missions

Ocim supports professionals and researchers in the evolution of their practices in the face of major societal challenges. It connects practices, ideas and resources to meet the new challenges of today’s world. With our teams and for our audiences, we encourage co-construction, activating ideas to produce useful thinking for the professions.

A Board of Trustees, comprising the French government and the University of Burgundy, is responsible for the governance and management of Ocim.

Ocim’s missions are divided into three areas of expertise: publishing, training and observation and economic intelligence.

Publishing

La lettre de l’Ocim, a trade magazine published three times a year, has, over the past 30 years, become a must-read for professionals seeking to understand major societal issues and the dynamics at work in the dialogue between science and society, by offering in-depth thematic dossiers. Ocim’s editorial offering is rounded out by the regular publication of articles and news items on its website.

Training courses

Ocim offers a varied catalog of training courses, covering technical skills such as osteological assembly and exhibition lighting, as well as pedagogical aspects such as edutainment, as well as more editorial subjects such as emotion in science exhibitions. Our expertise in professional development enables us to fashion tailor-made training programs to meet the needs of professionals as closely as possible.

Observation and economic intelligence

As part of its national observation mission, Ocim has developed tools to better understand and grasp the professional landscape, notably with the creation of an inventory of science-heritage-society players. The aim of this inventory is twofold: to highlight the importance and diversity of the players involved, and to give an account of the dynamics developing in the various regions of France.

At the same time, Ocim conducts a strategic watch on all disciplinary fields (museums, science centers, botanical gardens, third spaces, science and research establishments), as well as studies aimed at better understanding territorial dynamics and the challenges facing the sector.

Collaboration with all the players in the field enriches Ocim’s analyses and content, offering a cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary approach that embraces all heritages and scientific, technical and industrial cultures without distinction.

All these offers are designed to help museum and heritage professionals meet today’s challenges and anticipate those of tomorrow.
