Workshop “Populism, Democracy, and the Rise of the Far-Right” | Democracy Week 2025 FORTHEM

As part of Democracy Week, organised by FORTHEM Alliance in association with Université Bourgogne Europe, Théo Aiolfi, professor at Université Bourgogne Europe specialising in identity-based discourse, populism and far-right politics, will lead a one-hour workshop. It will include a presentation, interactive activities and a question-and-answer session.
On Monday 5 May, from 12.30pm to 2pm, this workshop will look at populism and its complex relationship with democracy, in the context of the rise of the far right. It will explore the positive and negative aspects of populism, showing how it has been used by far-right politicians to legitimise their ideas. The workshop will offer a practical definition of populism and explore its potential to strengthen communities often ignored in democratic debates.
The event will be free of charge, by reservation only, and will take place face-to-face at Maison Rhénanie Palatinat, bringing together participants from across FORTHEM Alliance. Refreshments will be provided on site.
