Geneviève Bianquis (1886-1972), German scholar

She taught at the Faculty of Letters from 1930 to 1947 (assistant professor in 1930; full professor in 1936; suspended by the Vichy regime). Thanks to her many translations, she played a key role in the understanding of German Romanticism and Nietzsche–interests that were central to her friendship with Bachelard. A left-wing activist, first in the SFIO and then in the French Communist party, she joined the Resistance and after the war was active in the Peace Movement.  An amphitheater is named in her honor.
