Jean-Baptiste Victor Proudhon (1758-1838), legal scholar

From a modest background, he studied at the University of Besançon, where he defended his thesis. At the time of the Revolution, he adopted advanced positions and then sided with Bonaparte. He then joined the newly re-created Dijon Law School, where in 1806 he obtained the chair of the Civil Code. In 1815, while Dean of the Law School, he was suspended for his Bonapartist views before being reinstated the following year. An amphitheater is named in his honor.
