Edgar Faure (1908-1988)

A key player in the Fourth Republic (twice President of the Council), he suffered electoral setbacks in 1956 and 1958. This legal scholar thus took the opportunity to complete a thesis and, in January 1962, became Professor of Roman Law and the History of Law at the University of Dijon, where he officially remained until 1972. But in 1965 he joined the Gaullist party and returned to politics. Minister of National Education after May 68, he had the “É. Faure law” passed, which gave autonomy to the universities.
