Jean Domarchi (1916-1981), economics and the new wave

After obtaining a doctorate in Paris in 1943 and an agrégation in 1945, he was promoted to the chair of political economy in Dijon in 1952, a position he held until his death. A specialist in the history of economic theories and one of the most rigorous interpreters of Marxism (Marx et l’histoire, 1972), his great passion was always the cinema. After the Liberation, he contributed to the “Cahiers du Cinéma,” then cooperated with Jean-Luc Godard on “À bout de souffle” and appeared in the 1959 film “Le signe du lion” by Éric Rohmer. He co-founded the club “Le Tabou” in Saint-Germain-des-Prés (1947-1962), a dance and jazz club that became a meeting place for existentialist thinkers.
